Size guide

A rug that's too small floats; too large and it disappears. The rule of thumb: leave 12–18 inches of floor visible around the rug's edge.

Living room: front legs of all seating on the rug, or a 9×12 under the whole arrangement.
Dining room: rug should extend 24" beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on it.
Bedroom: a 8×10 or 9×12, with the rug running under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
Runner: 2.5×8 or 2.5×10 for hallways; leave 6–12" of floor at each end.
