How to Clean and Maintain Hardwood Floors

Hardwood is one of the few floors that can look better at 30 than at 5 — if you care for it.

The daily routine

Sweep or dust-mop. That's it. Grit is the enemy; it's fine sandpaper underfoot.

The weekly routine

Damp-mop with a hardwood-specific cleaner. Damp, not wet. Standing water is the one mistake that ruins a finish fast — it seeps into joints, warps the wood, and blacks the edges.

Every few years

Screen and recoat every 3–5 years to refresh the wear layer without a full sand. Plan a full refinish every 20–30 years for solid hardwood; 1–2 times max for engineered.

What to avoid

Steam mops (the heat and moisture force water into seams), vinegar (it dulls the finish over time), and furniture with bare metal feet.
